[Epilogue]

Asahi Ward,
Osaka

One week later…

The damage Maru’s pub had sustained was quite sizeable but it was nothing compared to a few of the other buildings in the district. Everyone in the area was pitching in to help with the reconstruction and it was amazing to see both demons and humans working together co-operatively after the hate fuelled violence that had sparked the riot in the first place. The repairs on Maru’s shop were coming along nicely and it was anticipated that it would be opened back up for business by the following weekend. Out of all of them, Yasu was perhaps the most excited about reopening, taking every chance he could to promote the performance he would hold.

Maru heard the door bell chime and looked up from a crate of liquor, the contents of which he’d been stacking up on the wall. It was Ohkura and Ryo, dressed in their standard Light Walker uniform. He could sense that the other demons there were slightly unnerved with their sudden appearance, their eyes intent on the duo as they made their way over to Maru.

“Do you have a moment?” asked Ohkura. Maru nodded and he silently led Ohkura into the storeroom, leaving Ryo to face the crowd of demon stares on his own.

Silence stretched between them for several minutes as Maru busied himself with sorting the contents of the shelves, unpacking some of the boxes that lay in the right-hand corner. After some time, Maru stopped. “I shouldn’t really be surprised that you managed to track me down. You’re here to ask about Subaru, aren’t you?” When he received no reply, Maru continued. “Well, he’s not here any more. He said he had something to do and left several days ago.”

“Ah, is that so…” replied Ohkura, glancing down at his feet. He then took in a deep breath. “I was there when Yoko revived Subaru with demon blood. It wasn’t something I thought was possible, and I was against it, but Yoko didn’t want to listen. He was my superior after all at the time and I was still new to the team. I… didn’t think Subaru had survived it, as the body had mysteriously disappeared overnight, along with Yoko. I just assumed that Yoko had buried his friend’s body somewhere.”

Maru turned to lean back against the wall, staring long and hard at Ohkura. “It was probably a year after that when I found Subaru. He seemed to be withdrawn - soulless, even. I, too, was shocked to see him still alive and I wondered what had happened to him in the past year. At first he avoided me, but eventually, he told me his story. How he was nearly killed during a reconnaissance mission. Yoko using demon blood to revive him. An organisation that was looking into how to transfer the power of demons to ordinary human beings. The experiments they conducted on him. The bouts of uncontrolled violence and rage he experienced. And then finally, how he managed to escape their facility.”

Ohkura glanced up at Maru, a look of horror on his face. “That all happened to him?”

“It did,” said Maru, nodding. “And now he’s out to put a stop to it all. I just don’t understand why Yoko has gotten himself involved in all this.”

Ohkura glanced away, chewing on his bottom lip. “I think he’s been involved with that organisation from before he had to revive Subaru. He was always bringing in new weapons and tools, saying that they were his new ideas. There were also times where he would disappear for months on what our superiors would say were top secret assignments.” He suddenly clenched his fists tightly, a sudden determined look in his eyes. “You said he’s out to put a stop to all that, right?” Maru nodded and Ohkura continued. “Then I want to help. I’ll see what I can find out at the Dead Zone headquarters. Let him know that next time you see him.”

A grin slowly spread across Maru’s face as he crossed his arms over his chest. “Oh? You will? Then how will I contact you?”

“Give me your phone,” said Ohkura, holding out his hand. Maru pulled his phone out of his back pocket and handed it over. Ohkura keyed in his number and returned it to him. “Call me as soon as you meet Subaru again. I’ll try to make my way over as soon as I can. If I can’t, I’ll send Ryo over with what I know.”

Maru nodded as he placed his phone back into his pocket. “Well, I guess that’s that then. If you ever need the help of a wolf, you know where to find me. I used to assist the Light Walkers in the Dead Zone at one stage, you know,” he said, a small twinkle in his eye.

Ohkura smiled back at Maru. “I know. That’s how I managed to track you down so easily.”

They stepped out of the storeroom just in time to see Ryo fumble with trying to move a table as Yasu directed him. He’d somehow been coerced into helping out and the tense atmosphere that had fallen on the other demons when he’d arrived had now all but evaporated.

Ryo finally managed to put the table in a place Yasu found satisfactory and looked up to see Ohkura watching him. “Ah! Captain! Are you done?”

Ohkura nodded. “I’m just waiting for you to finish fooling around. Shall we leave?”

The two then excused themselves, promising Maru that they’ll visit out of their uniform the next time they were in Osaka. Ryo glanced up at Ohkura, noticing the satisfied look on his face.

“I take it he agreed?” asked Ryo.

“Hm. We have our work cut out for us, Ryo,” said Ohkura. “Are you up to it?”

Ryo grinned in reply. “Yeah, I’m up for it.”

Everything was just getting started.

Hi there :) I am so lucky to stumble upon this fic by accident. I totally adore this to bits. I love the whole world that you've created. And Maru being a total BAMF in the whole thing makes this fic a lot more awesome and yeah... I just love this.
